Church
The most impressive attraction is, without any doubt, the small wooden church, which is situated close to the ferry harbor. It is dedicated to Mary Magdalene and was erected in 1661. Some 200 years earlier a chapel was build on another place on Sottunga. During the Great Northern War the church was completely burnt down and rebuilding started at first in 1728. Since then the church has been renovated several times, most recently in 1974..

Historical Society Centre
In 1990 the local Historical Society took over the old school building, which had been built in the early 1900’s, and it was extensively renovated. Today the building is used as a museum and for exhibitions. Here you can see a school classroom from the turn of the century, complete with desks and wall hangings and even the living quarter of the teacher. Here it is also possible to buy local handicrafts. The museum is open during the Summer and features exhibitions of various aspects of local history.

Walking trails
There are three well signposted walking trails on the island. The 2,5 km trail, which both starts and finishes at the ferry harbor, takes walkers on a history tour with emphasis on the harbor area and the church. The second trail, approximately 1,5 km long runs alongside the small holiday cottage village and highlights local flora and fauna. The longest trail, 3 km, starts beside the school in the centre and describes village life and people from both the past and present.
Whilst wandering along the walking trials you may come across a reed sewage treatment works and the first modern wind power station on Åland (1992). The two 90 m high masts in south are a clear landmark in the surrounding archipelago.

Our new wind power station is producing electricity since Januari the 20th, 2005.

Södö och Sälsö
Södö island has four iron quarries which were operated in the 1840’s. Here it is also possible to read a inscription to mark the visit of king Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden on the island in 1806.
On Sälsö island it is possible to see an old light house and the watch keeping house of the pilots.
